The History of Japanese Tea

  • Kong Mountain Tea 1132 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge, MA 02138 United States (map)

In this tea class and tasting, we’ll explore the early history of Japanese tea and its roots in China. In the spring of 2024, Miles Cramer traveled throughout Japan, visiting key regions and historical sites central to the origins of Japanese tea culture.

During the session, we’ll taste teas from the regions he visited, alongside teas from Eastern China—where the story of Japanese tea first begins. A slideshow of photographs from Miles’s journey will accompany the tasting and discussion, offering visual context and deeper insight into the landscapes, traditions, and people behind these teas.
